Review iPhone 14 Pro: A Compact and Powerful Smartphone

The all-new iPhone 14 Pro is finally here and it's packed with features that are sure to impress. Although it may not be a huge overhaul compared to the previous model, there are still some meaningful changes that are worth taking a closer look at.

Design

The iPhone 14 Pro brings the full set of flagship features that you'd find on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but in a more compact form. One of the most notable changes in design is the replacement of the notch cutout for the selfie cam and 3D face recognition with a pill-shaped one called the "dynamic island." Additionally, the new model brings a new 48-megapixel main camera, and the camera bumps are wider in diameter and stick out more from the back panel. The flat back is protected by ceramic shield glass and there's a glossy flat steel frame. The size and weight are also similar to the previous model. The matte black color has been tweaked to be a little darker, and there's also a new purple color option. The new iPhones are also IP68 rated against dust and water up to 6 meters in depth.

Display

The display of the iPhone 14 Pro is a 6.1-inch super retina xcr OLED with a resolution of 460 PPI and ceramic shield protection. The display also features a 120Hz refresh rate and an always-on display. The new iPhone also boasts of a maximum brightness of 1800 nits in auto-brightness mode and a maximum manual slider of 840 nits. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are also the first iPhones to feature an always-on display. This feature keeps the lock screen on with a dim brightness level that adapts to the ambient light.

Dynamic Island

One of the most hyped new features of the iPhone 14 Pro is the dynamic island. Apple wants to make selfie cutouts cool again, and the dynamic island is its way of doing that. In its inactive form, there's just a blackened cutout that covers the selfie cam and face ID sensors. But when it activates, the cutout gets extended through the UI to include extra black space on the left and right sides. This space is used to display things from a compatible app like music or call information or it can show a system alert like charging or if you switch the phone to silent.

Storage and Operating System

The iPhone 14 Pro comes with plenty of storage options: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and even a whole terabyte. The new iPhone also runs on the latest iOS 16, which brings a host of new features and improvements.

Sound Quality

For audio, the iPhone 14 Pro has a pair of stereo speakers with the earpiece doubling as the second speaker. They have earned a score of good in loudness test and the sound quality is excellent with top-notch vocals, rich highs, and good bass.

In conclusion, the iPhone 14 Pro is a great phone that offers a lot of features in a compact form. The design, display, and dynamic island are all noteworthy features. The audio quality is also excellent. The only downside is that the new cutout sits a bit lower than the previous notch and that means it does take up a bit more usable screen space. But overall, this display is just great, content is sharp, vibrant, and contrasty, and the color accuracy is praiseworthy. It is definitely worth considering.
